Professional Bio
Tom is an veterinary epidemiologist and data scientist. He is the founder of ingenum, a company that provides epidemiological support to government agencies, agritech companies and livestock farmers. He graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2001 into the UK Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) outbreak and was involved as a field vet at the outset of the response. He moved to New Zealand in 2006 and undertook his MVS at Massey University and PhD through Cognosco with Scott McDougall. Tom started ingenum in 2016 in Otago and built a pilot version of the Sentinel syndromic surveillance system for Australia in 2018. In 2021, he developed Sentinel-AI with Qrious, an AI that learns the normal seasonal patterns of animal health traits in agricultural data. He currently consults to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) both facilitating FMD training for frontline veterinarians and on syndromic surveillance. He is an adjunct lecturer in cattle health and epidemiology at the faculty of veterinary medicine at Massey University. He also sporadically runs a family farm in Otago.
