Professional Bio
Raphael Vanderstichel is an Associate Professor at the Long Island University - College of Veterinary Medicine. Beginning his veterinary career in a mixed-animal practice in England he transitioned to research, earning a PhD in epidemiology at the Atlantic Veterinary College in 2007 under the supervision of Dr Ian Dohoo. Post-PhD, he held various roles, including Research Associate collaborating with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on statistical models for disease freedom in Canadian swine. Later, as Research Scientist in the Canada Excellence Research Chair team led by Dr Ian Gardner, his focus shifted to pathogen surveillance and transmission in aquaculture. Progressing through academia, Dr Vanderstichel integrated teaching DVM students with ongoing research examples, cultivating collaborations in aquatic epidemiology, wildlife health, and disease surveillance. His recent interests involve the integration of machine learning algorithms, particularly large language models, into veterinary problem-solving and evidence-based medicine.
